Holme Fen, Cambridgeshire - February 2007

LEISURE
By: W H Davies

WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?
No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass
No time to see in broad daylight
Streams full of stars, like skies at night
No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

Thought you might like to see a picture of one of the Fen lakes and woods near us.

There are some great walks around there and Mr A, KK and Mist were there this morning :)

The poem is one of my favourites and when the everyday world gets too stressful..... I like to think about it and how important it is to take the 'time out' to stand and stare and appreciate this beautiful world of ours.

As the great Del Boy Trotter once said in 'Only Fools and Horses' whilst standing and staring a lovely view:

"If God made all this, then out here is where you should thank him"

Just to the right of the photo, there's an old bedstead sticking out of the water. Also the bank is littered with Buckfast bottles!!:))

No, that's a typical scene in central Scotland!!:((

Sometimes, I'm astounded with your insight and tenderness Anna!!! This is one of those times!:))

“Leisure is a form of silence, not noiselessness. It is the silence of contemplation such as occurs when we let our minds rest on a rosebud, a child at play, a Divine mystery, or a waterfall.”

Lovely poem Anna, the words so transport you to another place. The picture captures the words in perfect harmony.

This is a great poem, and so true!! Perfect photo to reflect the words, Anna!

and, Peajay, and wonderful quote to match!

:D

Thanks guys ..... glad you liked it!! :D

Nice clock, very mousey! ;)

anna said...

Its supposed to be a rat Peajay :)

The clock site asks you what Chinese year you were born in ..... I'm a rat. :)

No comments, please AJ!! :D

Peajay said...

My apologies, I was hardly just going to come out with a rat accusation so opted for the cuter mouse. :) Tad bit unfortunate being born in that particular year, I'm a sheep/goat so vaguely more cuddly which is ok as I'm also Aries.
It looks good though and a lot easier than working out the other one.

Anna, the year of the Rat... these people are blessed with great personal charm and intelligence...and know how to use their magnetism to their advantage!!

Peajay, the Ram, most gifted esp in creative and artistic; kind-hearted and sincere!!

Hare, for AJ, is honesty and integrity, discreet and diplomatic....sociable, with good taste, and great communicators!!

AJ Fife said...

Peajay,

I think there might be something in this, year of the... business!:))

AJ
You're so easily swept up by complimentary southern talk and the fact it was a little cutesy Hare as opposed to a snake or pig. :D

Melanie said...

Peajay, it is interesting, the characteristics, you have to admit, they do fit for all of you, pretty much!!!

...also for the ram is they favor a tension free environment, and love nature and wildlife

I am not making this stuff up, I took it out of an article regarding the Chinese New Year!

Yep, that's me alright!!:D They forgot to add modesty! :)

Btw: Mine is a cuddly rat (like the one in Wind of the Willows) not a plague carrying nasty rat!

Peajay said...

A cuddly rat!! :D

anna said...

Peajay... KK has a very nice puppet of Ratty from Wind in the Willows .... he is dressed in a nice stripy boating jacket, a white shirt and an orange cravat. That's the kind of rat I mean...

Also, don't forget Ratty was very kind to Mole.

I'm not talking the common or garden rat here..... heaven forbid! :D

(KK has Badger, Toad and Mole as well .... and they've all got great outfits on!! :)

Peajay said...

As opposed to a 'plague carrying nasty rat' they really do get a bad press don't they? ;)

anna said...

We had some nasty (probably plague carrying) ones at the bottom of the garden last year.... Gross!!

We have some fruit trees down there and they were picking up the fallen fruit.

Mr A put some traps and poison down and I haven't seen any since.... but they do make me shudder!!

I'm not keen on any little furry things (including hamsters/guinea pigs) and I really don't like snakes at all.

anna said...

Have you ever been to the London Dungeon ... Peajay?

I went there a few years ago... and in the Great Plague tableaux ... they had a glass fronted container and it had real rats in there. Loads of them...

I had to go out of the place ... it was awful... I never did get all the way round it.

I wouldn't fancy spending the night in there that's for sure... you end up round the bend.

Melanie said...

I equally agree, never could fathom why anyone would keep a rat etc as a pet!!! eeeuuuuwwwwhhhh!!!!

like the movie with Sean Connery, Indiana Jones and the search for the Grail!!! :/

Rats!!! :D

AJ Fife said...

From the last few posts,I can see that you're all a bunch of scared wee lassies. Also, Anna has a problem with furry snakes!!!:)) I think I would too!

anna said...

:D AJ.... it did sound like I meant furry snakes!! :D

Well, it was late.......only excuse.

OK ... I don't like snakes and I know they're not slimy .. but they look as if they should be.

Mr A and KK were taking turns holding a snake last time we visited the zoo. I didn't want to go in the reptile house in the first place ... and the 2 of them nearly had me scared witless with the b***dy thing.

"Go on, Mum ... you hold it"

"Not on your nelly... I'm off for a cup of coffee .... and a brandy chaser to settle my nerves!!" :)

No haven't been to the London Dungeon, I try not to go looking for scary stuff (life's to much like it already so why anyone would pay to see things like Blair Witch or zombie fest films is beyond me).
As to the rats, I believe they make for a very intelligent pet. Although in my youth I read the book The Rats and Lair by James Herbert (it was a bit of a dare thing) and that kind of coloured my view against them.

Mind you .. AJ.. its amazing how many of the things that Wee Eck says (see I know the nickname!!)... gets repeated continuously on the Scotsman independence blogs :)

Its time... people learnt some new lines ...:)

I have to say that he doesn't seem as abrasive as he used to... age must have refined his rough edges a bit :)

Do you think he'll be First Minister?

AJ Fife said...

Wee Eck is OK, he sometimes comes over as 'smug', but he is a clever orator and seldom struggles in an argument. I'm not sure how the election will pan out, but I would like to think the SNP can win with a small majority.

I would like to see Wee Eck carry on in Westminster as it would really create a stir! Scottish First Minister splits time between the two seats of power!!!! Not exactly how Mr Blair envisaged the new Scottish Parliament working!!:))

anna said...

I see Wee Eck's party is going for a term in office before independence.... according to the SofS.

Makes sense, if I was voting I'd be put off by the straight for independence route of a party which has not been tested in power. I'd want to see if they could handle the pressure first.

I think they might get some of the 'don't knows' voting for them if they try this tack.

Whatcha think... AJ?

AJ Fife said...

I'm not sure Anna!! The SNP was formed as a means to achieve independence by way of a referendum - for a long time that was the sole aim! It has now become a political party in the conventional sense, so I suppose they would have the chance to prove themselves if they win the election in May.

The danger would be, the SNP would then be exposed to a prolonged attack from Westminster, aimed at destabilising the Holyrood administration. Of course this could also play into the hands of the SNP, as they could highlight the level of Westminster interference!!!

I'm not sure what would be the best way to proceed - have to give it more thought!! However, I've always been of the opinion that independance would take years to sort out in a civilised way, so the governance still would have to go on, no matter what happens!!!

Did I make it clearer for you??:DD

anna said...

Yes, thanks... AJ ... the mud is a bit clearer now!! :D

The murky world of politics :)
